This Home Learning Project investigates the nature of prayer. Students will consider the different ways in which people pray, before reflecting on why prayer is so important to Christians.
Students will consider their own need to communicate with friends and family at different times, perhaps when they are sad or excited. Links are drawn between this intrinsic need and a Christian’s need to talk to God in prayer. Students will investigate the different types of prayer: communal and individual, exploring the Common Book of Prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, and testimonies from individual Christians. They will move on to compare and contrast the two different types of prayer by completing a Venn diagram, before summarising in their own words the different types of prayer.
Communication being a two-way thing, students will further investigate prayer by listening to several testimonies of Christians who have heard from God, noting down at least five examples from the stories. This leads into a short, written piece in response to the learning thus far, which requires them to evaluate and explain why prayer is so important to Christians.
There is a final, creative task, where students are required to create a script for a podcast interview on the topic of prayer. An example of a script is included as a model for their own piece.
By the end of the project students will gain a thorough understanding of how Christians pray and why it is so important to them. This project should take around 4 hours to complete if the extension activities are attempted.
An editable PDF resource sheet is provided for students to record their research. The resource sheet is differentiated, with two levels to choose from. The ‘Stretch’ version is more challenging, it is advised that most students use this copy. The ‘Light’ version has pared down tasks and support, for example sentence starters and the Venn diagram partially completed.
