Our world is changing. We have felt that change in our own lives, from our restrictions on seeing our friends and family to being able to go out and visit shops and cafes. But this pandemic is something that will have a global impact, and a greater impact on those living in poverty around the world. We want to explore what that looks like, why it will impact certain people the most and what we can do to help people lift themselves out of poverty.

CHAT:

Use these questions below to chat with others or reflect by yourself:
What do we mean when we talk about poverty?
What do you think are some of the causes of poverty?
Why are some people more effected by the virus than others?
Why is poverty a reason that someone would suffer more from this virus?
Have you ever experienced suffering because of something out of your control?
What could be done to help people in these situations?
Is there anything that you think you could do?

PRAY:

One thing that can cause or contribute towards poverty is division. When people are apart either physically or in terms of what they have or have access to, it can create poverty and make it feel worse.

Grab a piece of paper and cut it into strips lengthways. Curl those strips up into chains and make a paper chain by linking them together. Write on each strip of paper a way that you can help the people around you feel more connected or a reason that ‘togetherness’ is good and helpful.

As you do this, pray for people who are in poverty and are suffering even more than they might normally do at the moment because of COVID-19.

DO:

People in poverty often don’t have access to luxuries and items that you might take for granted. Why not have a day when you give up any luxuries. Only drink water, don’t have any treats or nice things to eat. Don’t look at any screens all day or borrow someone else’s clothes that don’t fit properly to wear.

This doesn’t accurately show you what it’s like to really live in poverty, but as you are doing this activity for a day, it might help you to see just a glimpse of what it would be like to not have easy access to these things.
